Goya

The Georgia Museum of Art currently has Francisco de Goya's monumental collection of prints - "The Disasters of War" on display. I highly recommend this show, these are powerful images made by a master at the height of his powers at 62 years old.  If you go don't plan on anything else. I spent about an hour and a half with the 80 prints and a magnifying glass the museum provides  (also recommended), I then went and stared at a tree for a while, it's a lot to take in. The show is up through November 3rd. go.

It is still an open question, however, as to what extent exposure really injures a performer.

Happy Creation of the Earth Day

According to John Lightfoot (March 29, 1602 – December 6, 1675) "heaven and earth, centre and circumference, were created all together, in the same instant, and clouds full of water," and that "this work took place and man was created by the Trinity on October 23, 4004 B.C., at nine of the clock in the morning."

Lady Helena Newenham and the Spirit of Her Daughter

Frederick A. Hudson (England)
Lady Helena Newenham and the Spirit of Her Daughter

Albumen carte de visite, 2.25 x 4 inches

June 4, 1872
Hudson had a studio at 177 Holloway Road, London. He is credited with producing the first spirit photograph made in Britain on March 4, 1872, just three months before this image was made.
Inscription on verso:

"June 4th 1872/Mrs. Olive (?) and Mr. Herne, Mediums. Lady Helena Newenham and the spirit of her daughter."

Frank Herne was a prominent medium who began giving seances in January, 1869. Witnesses reported he was capable of levitation during seances and was even miraculously transported from place to place by spirits.

Charles Simic "On Writing Poetry"

A Few Things to Keep in Mind When Sitting Down to Write a Poem

  1. Don't tell the readers what they already know about life.
  2. Don't assume you're the only one in the world who suffers.
  3. Some of the greatest poems in the language are sonnets and poems not many lines longer than that, so don't overwrite.
  4. The use of images, similes and metaphors make poems concise. Close your eyes, and let your imagination tell you what to do.
  5. Say the words you are writing aloud and let your ear decide what word comes next.
  6. What you are writing down is a draft that will need additional tinkering, perhaps many months, and even years of tinkering.
  7. Remember, a poem is a time machine you are constructing, a vehicle that will allow someone to travel in their own mind, so don't be surprised if it takes a while to get all its engine parts properly working.
