Alan Flurry's Book

I designed the cover for the Kindle edition of my friend Alan Flurry's book - Cansville. It's a great read from a local Athens, Georgia writer.

HARRY CREWS PECAN CRUSTED CHICKEN INSTRUCTIONS

HARRY CREWS died a while back and I thought I would share his pecan crusted chicken recipe.  I interviewed him for Flagpole Magazine back in the mid 90's. He had a hell of a physical presence - head like a bulldog anvil - and he was a strange combination of dirty old man - one minute telling really nasty jokes that would segue into Shakespearean quotes and beautiful, sad stories. I miss the fact that he is not on this earth, churning out words like a maniac (500 words a day, every day). I've tried the recipe - follow as closely as possible.

Don - "So Mr. Crews, I heard that you have a great recipe for fried chicken with pecans." (I should note here that these words and a brief introduction were the only things I remember saying during the entire 2 hours we talked - the man could talk like a carny).

Mr. Crews - "Well yes I do, I consider myself a damn fine cook, love to do it. Now the thing is,  you have to remember to love the chicken. You gotta let the chicken know how wonderful it is. I take the bird up in my hands and talk real softly to it - 'oh you are a fine chicken, a fine fine chicken, what a beautiful bird. I love you chicken, I love you.' That's right now, you don't just start rolling the thing in buttermilk, flour and pecans and throwing it in hot grease - god dammit you gotta let that bird know it's appreciated or it won't taste any damn good. That bird will not cook right if it doesn't think you love it. That's how I do it anyway."

Everything Is Going to Be OK: The Mercer Street Medical Case

Our song "Red in the Face" from the Goat's first album is going to be featured in this documentary about the sad state of health care in America and a doctor that is doing something about it . Please donate to support this project and maybe one day we will all take care of each other instead of turning medicine into the uncaring disaster it is.

WELCOME

For those of you who followed the old blog - Donchambersmusic - welcome to the new one, the song remains the same - just needed a new set of shoes. I intend to post more often, which should be easy since every three months isn't too hard. Until a new website is up this will be the place to find show news, recording news, or anything else about myself or GOAT. Join in with comments and let me know if you there - just cough. - Don

UNTIL THE WORLD RUNS OUT OF DIRT

Don Chambers at the Georgia Theater after the fire. from Jason Thrasher on Vimeo.

We shot this video a month or so after the fire at the Theatre, still smelled like the seventh level of hell in there, but sounded great. Strange combination of sadness at something going away and fascination at the destruction.

PREACHY

I try not to share too many links, but this one is worth being called preachy for.

The Bottomless Suitcase : Case no. 01061311 - Ravens

The Bottomless Suitcase is a project to release oddities, rarities, absurdities and assundry recording and videos that I 've been involved with. It's meant as a sort of Cabinet of Curiosities,  a Wunderkammer.

In today's first installment: a live recording of "Ravens" from the WUOG 90.5 Live in the Lobby show, October 8, 2009. This features myself on vocals, guitar and special agent John Barner on secret technical shenanigans. Video by Harold Falloompo - my longtime art department collaborator. Hope you like it. - Don

Canival Saloon Blogspot

One of the greatest things about the Internet are the myriad of new sites that replace magazines, radios, TV, etc. You can find someone out there who loves some obscure 'anything' just as much as you. I think it is wonderful and for that reason I want to plug my friend Nigel's blog carnivalsaloon.blogspot.com, which is a music lovers journal that just gets better and better. Nigel was a most gracious host while I was visiting London a few years ago, plus he's a damn fine writer. The latest entry is about the Titanic...

I will happily resort to stereotype and say that the Irish need no excuse for festivities so should we really be surprised that Belfast celebrated the 100th anniversary, of the ill-fated launch ...

Website, Shows, Giants

donchambersmusic.com is under construction so we will be using this site for updates. Thanks to Jenn Bryant for helping us.

We have two shows coming up this summer in Athens,  Athfest on the second stage Saturday June 25 at around 7pm. Then August 9 we will be playing the grand opening week of the mighty Georgia Theatre (see picture above). I haven't been back to there since the day we filmed the video, I'm very excited to see what Wilmont has done with the place.

I found this guy by the side of the road in Washington , Ga. He looks so forlorn beside the closed sign, but I think he also means business.   cheers - Don

Million Dollar Bash Dylan Birthday Show

John Barner and I played my favorite Dylan songs: Dark Eyes, Ballad of a Thin Man, Visions of Johanna and Blind Willie McTell at the Manhatten Bar Tuesday night to a wonderful crowd - packed to the gills and still hung out for 4 hours listening to Dylan songs by various Athens musicians. Thanks to everybody for a wonderful evening! (photos by Julie Phillips)

JOSH T. PEARSON

Having played a show in London, myself and my banjo were boarding the plane to fly back to Berlin, where I was living at the time. I hear this Texas drawl behind me ask "if I know how to use that thing?" - meaning my banjo - he was wearing a beard as long as Florida and we struck a friendship then and there. Turned out he was living in Berlin as well and playing in London as well. Well, he's got a record coming out this month on Mute that I cannot wait to hear. Enjoy the video.
