Joseph Bueys

Art alone makes life possible – this is how radically I should like to formulate it. I would say that without art man is inconceivable in physiological terms… …I would say man does not consist only of chemical processes, but also of metaphysical occurrences. The provocateur of the chemical processes is located outside the world. Man is only truly alive when he realizes he is a creative, artistic being… …Even the act of peeling a potato can be a work of art if it is a conscious act.

Betty Davis

"To fulfill a dream, to be allowed to sweat over lonely labor, to be given a chance to create, is the meat and potatoes of life. The money is the gravy."

Mark Rothko

It is a widely accepted notion among painters that it does not matter what one paints as long as it is well painted. This is the essence of academicism.

Mark Heard

No single musician had a bigger influence on my wanting to be an artist than Mark Heard. He worked in the ghetto of contemporary christian music, a place I think he grew to hate. He wrote from the gut and the heart, he didn't flinch from telling the truth, and he always put the song first. When he played he stomped like hell and spat and sweated, he delivered with everything. I don't always relate to the lyrics anymore, they were written for a certain context, but he set the template for me. He died 20 years ago today, I never knew him personally, but I still miss him.

Strereogranimator

The New York Public Library has an online tool called aStereogranimator which allows you to create your own animated "wiggle gifs" that create the optical illusion of three dimensions from vintage stereograph slides.

Robert Hughes

"The greater the artist, the greater the doubt. Perfect confidence is granted to the less talented as a consolation prize."

Andrei Tarkovsky

"Some sort of pressure must exist; the artist exists because the world is not perfect. Art would be useless if the world were perfect, as man wouldn’t look for harmony but would simply live in it. Art is born out of an ill-designed world.”

Don Chambers Live at Whole: Mind. Body. Art.

I played a solo show at Whole in Athens opening for Hope for a Golden Summer. There's some new stuff in there, as well as a 98 spoon orchestra at the end. Thanks to Sloan Simpson for recording.

Bill Doss

My heart goes out to friends and family of Bill Doss. Goat recorded our second record in his attic (I Got the Recollection of the Blood of the Lamb). He was generous, kind and a hell of a singer, songwriter, producer, etc - he did it all. I really loved singing "Sin City" with him at a Graham Parsons tribute show. Still can't believe he's gone. Here are the lyrics to Sin City -

THIS OLD TOWN’S FILLED WITH SIN
IT’LL SWALLOW YOU IN
IF YOU’VE GOT SOME MONEY TO BURN
TAKE IT HOME, RIGHT AWAY
YOU’VE GOT THREE YEARS TO PAY
BUT SATAN IS WAITING HIS TURN

THIS OLD EARTHQUAKE’S GONNA LEAVE ME IN THE POORHOUSE
IT SEEMS LIKE THIS WHOLE TOWN’S INSANE
ON THE THIRTY FIRST FLOOR
A GOLD PLATED DOOR
WON’T KEEP OUT THE LORDS BURNING RAIN

THE SCIENTISTS SAY, IT’LL ALL WASH AWAY
BUT WE DON’T BELEIVE ANY MORE
‘COS WE’VE GOT OUR RECRUITS
AND OUR GREEN MOHAIR SUITS
SO PLEASE SHOW YOUR I.D. AT THE DOOR

A FRIEND CAME AROUND
TRIED TO CLEAN UP THIS TOWN
HIS IDEAS MADE SOME PEOPLE MAD
HE TRUSTED HIS CROWD
SO HE SPOKE RIGHT OUT LOUD
AND THEY LOST THE BEST FRIEND THEY HAD
